Voice of Store Staff

Q.What kind of customers do you have?

Kyoto Gion Store Staff

The group is mainly couples, families, and women's groups who are sightseeing in Kyoto. Since it is located in the middle of Gion and has a lot of foot traffic, there are many customers who suddenly want to buy a kimono in front of the store and come into the store. Since there are many different nationalities, translation tools are essential, but when I show them how to coordinate my torso and explain it to them, they often say, ``This is good.'' During the Gion Festival, some people rent yukata in groups. During the school trip season, there are many student groups.

Q.What are you doing renting a kimono?

Kyoto Gion Store Staff

Yasaka Shrine, Kiyomizu Temple, and Minamiza are close by, so there are many people going sightseeing, going to the theater, or just walking around the Gion area and taking photos. Also, Keihan's Gion-Shijo Station and Hankyu's Kawaramachi Station are also nearby. There are quite a few people who rent them in Gion and take the train to Arashiyama or Fushimi Inari.

Q.What kind of kimono is popular?

Kyoto Gion Store Staff

Foreigners tend to choose flashy kimonos, but recently more and more people are choosing retro-modern homongi and antique kimonos. People who go to the theater often choose to wear homongi.

Q.Visit - Experience - Return flow

Kyoto Gion Store Staff

Those who are heading to nearby tourist spots often rent a kimono in the afternoon after eating, take a walk around the area, and return in the evening. Of course, those who want to enjoy kimono sightseeing at a leisurely pace, or those who are heading to sightseeing spots such as Arashiyama by train, should make reservations in the morning.

Q.Kyoto Gion Store’s appeal points

Kyoto Gion Store Staff

Keihan's Gion-Shijo Station and Hankyu Kawaramachi Station are within walking distance, and you can access the area from Keihan without getting wet in the rain. Yasaka Shrine and Minamiza are also nearby, so I think it's a very convenient location for those who want to rent a kimono at a tourist spot and go sightseeing empty-handed. Our store is large and we have a large selection of kimonos, so you can enjoy choosing your kimono and obi.

Recommended sightseeing spots

Nanzenji Temple

Nanzenji Temple

Located in Ginza, Tokyo, this theater is dedicated to the traditional Japanese performing art of Kabuki, and is a representative spot where you can experience Japanese culture! You can enjoy the unique atmosphere not only from the outside, but also inside the theater, and be captivated by the powerful Kabuki performances and gorgeous costumes. It's a 7-minute walk from the store, and we also recommend watching the theater in a kimono.

Yasaka Shrine

Yasaka Shrine

Yasaka Shrine is a historic shrine located in Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto City, and is a representative spot in Kyoto known as the center of the Gion Festival! When you step into the shrine grounds, the beautiful vermilion west tower gate and main shrine catch your eye, and it has been popular as Gion Shrine since ancient times. At the main shrine where Susano-onomikoto is enshrined, there is no shortage of worshipers praying for good health and warding off evil spirits. In addition, the Gion Festival, held every July, is a festival where gorgeous floats are paraded and is crowded with many tourists. When visiting Yasaka Shrine, we recommend renting a kimono and strolling around Gion while enjoying the cityscape and majestic atmosphere in traditional costume.

Kiyomizu Temple

Kiyomizu Temple

Kiyomizu-dera is a historic temple representing Japan, located in Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto City, and is also registered as a World Heritage Site! Particularly famous is the main hall, known as the "Shimizu Stage," where you can enjoy the beautiful scenery of each season, and it is a popular photo spot for tourists. Also, the water of Otowa Falls is said to have the blessings of "extending life and longevity," "fulfilment in love," and "achievement in studies," and many people come to worship. There are old-fashioned streets such as Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka in the surrounding area, and you can enjoy walking around them.

Minamiza

Minamiza

Minamiza is Japan's oldest theater located in Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto City, and is a historical spot where traditional Kabuki performances are held! You can feel the stateliness from the outside, and inside the theater you will be overwhelmed by the gorgeous costumes and powerful stage performances. There are tourist attractions such as Gion and Yasaka Shrine near the theater, so we recommend enjoying the atmosphere of Kyoto before or after seeing the theater. Also, if you go to the theater at Minamiza, be sure to rent a kimono to make your time even more special.
